In Vancouver, a car drove into a crowd at the festival: there are casualties.


In Vancouver, during the Lapu Lapu Day street festival, a tragic incident occurred when a car drove into a crowd of people, resulting in the deaths of 9 individuals. The police are currently unaware of the exact number of injured. The incident took place near the festival location at the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.
Although the driver of the car has been arrested, the police have not yet disclosed the reasons for the incident or the motives of the detainee. However, they state that this is not a terrorist attack and are currently determining the causes and discussing them.
Around midnight, the acting police chief, Steve Rai, reported that witnesses held the suspect until the police arrived, who was previously known to law enforcement.
This festival is held annually in honor of Lapu Lapu, a Filipino warrior who opposed Spanish colonization in the 16th century. This event is the second annual street celebration in Vancouver and provides the opportunity to honor Filipino values and the spirit of the bayanihan community effort.
This incident remains under investigation by the police and it is currently impossible to draw conclusions about the causes and consequences of this tragedy.
In British Columbia, the Filipino community is the third largest cultural group after South Asian and Chinese residents. According to statistics, this community makes up 3.5% of the total population of the province, which is over 174,000 individuals.
