The number of offenses involving firearms has sharply increased in Ukraine.

Deputy Interior Minister Leonid Tymchenko reported that the number of offenses involving firearms, explosive devices, and ammunition has sharply risen during the third year of the war. According to him, in 2021 there were 273 such crimes, in 2022 - 1267, and in 2023 - 11,186. In the almost full year of 2024, 11,489 similar offenses have been registered.
Tymchenko emphasized that significant legislative changes are necessary in the context of active warfare. In particular, he mentioned the law on weapon declaration that came into effect on November 25. He noted that the law was adopted after thorough development and consideration of many controversial issues. The deputy minister stressed that this provision satisfies everyone and is written into the law.
The main goal of declaring weapons is to ensure the safety of citizens and compliance with the law.
Tymchenko also highlighted the importance of balancing citizens' access to weapons and control over them. He further noted the need to create conditions so that people do not misuse firearms without proper grounds.
