Odessa is preparing to install new memorial plaques and to expand the Alley of Stars with another figure. Changes are also planned in the names of some streets in the city as part of decommunization, reports the Odessa city council.

New renamings

The city council has considered numerous initiatives to honor the memory of prominent personalities from Odessa. In particular, it is proposed to name Children's Art School No. 4 after Vladimir Stakhovsky, a renowned musician and educator, in honor of his 100th anniversary.

Furthermore, Molokov Lane is planned to be renamed in honor of Irina Popova, the founder of modern sociology, and Chapayeva Street will be changed to Tsekhovaya.

New star and memorial plaques

It has been proposed to honor the name of artist Gennady Harmider on the Alley of Stars, who dedicated many of his works to the architecture and history of the city.

New memorial plaques have also been approved for installation:

  • A plaque for composer Alexander Krasotov will be installed on the building where he lived.
  • A plaque for Ukrainian defender Yury Slepchenko will be installed on the facade of the O. I. Marine Academy.

All decisions supported by the historical and toponymic commission will need to be approved at the next session of the city council.

Additional memorial plaques and new street names in the city are part of the Odessa city council's initiative to honor prominent personalities and reflect the cultural heritage of the city. Further approvals of these decisions at the city council will show how much support they find among residents and whether they will become part of the city's history.
